About Therapy Tools Reviewed

Independent reviews of AI therapy and mental health tools for consumers and therapists. No vendor publishes our rankings.

Why We Exist

When we started researching AI therapy tools, we discovered something troubling: every comparison site ranking on page one of Google was published by a vendor ranking their own product first. Mentalyc, Life Note, Reframe Practice, Yuna — all publish "comparison" articles that position themselves as the #1 choice without adequate disclosure.

For a YMYL topic like mental health, this matters. Consumers seeking AI therapy apps deserve to know that Wysa has 30+ peer-reviewed papers while many competitors have zero. Therapists evaluating AI note tools deserve honest assessments of HIPAA compliance, note accuracy, and pricing tradeoffs.

Therapy Tools Reviewed fills this gap. We are editorially independent, disclose all affiliate relationships, and rank tools by clinical evidence and user experience — not by who pays us the most.

Our Mission

To be the most trusted independent source for AI therapy and mental health tool comparisons. We achieve this through:

  • Radical transparency: Every affiliate relationship disclosed on every page. Commission amounts stated openly.
  • Evidence-first ranking: Clinical evidence quality is the highest-weighted factor in our assessments. A tool with zero published research cannot rank above a tool with 30+ peer-reviewed papers.
  • YMYL responsibility: Crisis resources on every page. Mental health disclaimers above the fold. No claims that AI "treats" or "cures" conditions.
  • Dual-audience coverage: Consumers and therapists have different needs. We cover both without conflating them.

Editorial Team

Why Trust Our Reviews?

Therapy Tools Reviewed is produced by an editorial team with backgrounds in:

  • Clinical Mental Health — We consult with licensed mental health practitioners (LCSWs, LMFTs, licensed psychologists) on clinical accuracy, evidence reviews, and YMYL standards. Our clinical reviewers verify all claims about therapy modalities, clinical research, and treatment effectiveness.
  • Health Tech Journalism — Our editors come from health tech journalism and digital health research backgrounds, with experience covering FDA regulation, HIPAA compliance, and AI/ML in clinical settings.
  • Independent Methodology — We do not employ practicing therapists who would face conflicts of interest with reviewed platforms. Our clinical advisors review content but do not write reviews directly.

Editorial Standards

Every review is:

  • Cross-checked against published peer-reviewed research where claims are made
  • Reviewed by clinical advisors before publication for any platforms making therapeutic claims
  • Updated quarterly or whenever a platform announces material changes (pricing, FDA status, clinical evidence, ownership)
  • Disclosed transparently — we clearly mark where we have or do not have direct hands-on testing data

What We Cover

We review 15 platforms across two audiences:

  • Consumer AI therapy apps (B2C): Wysa, Youper, Replika, Talkiatry, MindDoc, and others — apps for individuals seeking mental health support
  • AI tools for therapists (B2B): Upheal, Mentalyc, Blueprint, SimplePractice, Freed, Alma, Lyssn — AI session notes, analytics, and practice management for mental health professionals

Affiliate Disclosure

Some platforms have affiliate programs that pay us commissions when readers sign up through our links:

  • Upheal: $300 per referred paying subscriber
  • Alma: $500 per provider referral
  • SimplePractice: $100+ per paid account
  • Freed: $50 per subscription
  • Wysa: 15% recurring via Refersion
  • Mentalyc: Revenue share (undisclosed %)

These commissions help fund our research and content creation. They never influence rankings. Platforms without affiliate programs (Blueprint, Youper, Lyssn, Talkiatry, Replika, MindDoc, Elomia) receive the same depth of coverage.
